ADSL Routers - Information You Can Use

By Bob Hobson

Naysayers might predict that Americans are becoming addicted to the internet. However, in terms of any other type of addiction, including television, the internet surely comes out on top. It is a tool that allows us to communicate with friends and family. It is a huge reference library that we can universally access through a few taps of the keyboard. It is an interactive form of entertainment that engages us to respond to what we saw or read and get our voices heard. It is constantly redefining modern living. If you do not yet have permanent access to the internet, you may not yet realize that you are missing out. However, with just a computer and one of the ADSL routers, you can be on the Internet in no time.

An ADSL router is the best option today for internet connectivity. The first reason is because it is so fast.

Dial ups can connect at a maximum of fifty-six kilobits a second. At that speed it can take two or three minutes to load a short YouTube video. ADSL routers connect at speeds ranging from about two hundred kilobits per second to two or three megabits per second. At this speed you would not even have to wait for the YouTube video to load, it would simply start playing as soon as you opened the page.

This translated to a very slow browsing speed. It would even take five to ten second to load a text only email. If you wanted to look at pictures it could take minutes and video was simply out of the question. However, ADSL routers will connect you to the web at speeds of two hundred kilobits per second to two or three megabits per second.

Dial up modems are also known as voiceband modems, which means that they transferred their information through your phone line on the same frequency that is used by telephone companies to transfer your voice, zero to four kilohertz.

When you make a call on your telephone, the signal that holds your voice travels through your telephone lines at a frequency of zero to four kilohertz.

Dial up modems also employed that same frequency to transfer data. This meant that if you were on the phone you couldn't connect to the internet and vice versa. However, ADSL routers send their data at a frequency of twenty-five kilohertz to one megahertz. This significantly higher frequency means that you can send computer data and voice data at the same time on the same line. All you need to do is make sure you have your DSL filter switched on; it should come configured that way from the factory.

Once you see just how great a tool an ADSL router is for getting you hooked up to the internet, you will want to hook your computer up with one. This is also fairly easy. Some faster, newer computers come with an internal router. Most, however, need an external one. You plug it into a power source, a phone jack, and your computer. Then you configure it to your system and your ADSL router should have you exploring the internet in no time.
