Is Florescent Light A Better Alternative To Incandescent Lights ?

By Scott Rodgers
Nov 4, 2009
People are phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs in favor of energy efficient lighting. Moreover, a large percentage is now using florescent tubes so as to minimize their utility charges. Unlike the old incandescent lights, this distinct technology emits a large amount of visible light instead of heat.

Florescent lights consists of two main parts- one is a glass tube that is filled with gas and the other is an electronic ballast. Whenever the ballast conducts, a current is passed into the gas tube, thereby emitting ultraviolet light. These light rays when strike the phosphor coating, radiates light.

There are numerous advantages of compact florescent tubes as compared to high powered incandescent lamps. Some of them are listed below. These light sources consumes only one third of the total power that is consumed by the incandescent lamps. In florescent light lamps, as the electrons temporarily jump into the higher energy level, electrical energy gets converted into radiant energy.

These have a rated lifespan of 6000 to 15000 hours whereas incandescent lamps are manufactured to have a lifespan of some 750 to 1000 hours. In addition to this, they can help save money on electricity bills because of their great energy efficient rating.

Another most advantageous part of this newer light source is, they don't burst out with frequent on and off. Besides, the old fashioned incandescent aggravates the environment since it release a huge amount of heat that enhances global warming.

Furthermore, the turn on time of compact florescent tubes is very less as compared to that of the conventional light sources that use incandescence.

As the technology advances, florescent lights are now used to intensify the homes. There comes a huge variety of shapes, sizes, colors and designs of florescent lights by which you can enhance the look of your home. Moreover, these have become a new standard for home lighting.

Due to the potential to reduce electric consumption and pollution, various organizations have encouraged the adoption of florescent tubes.
