Indie Rock Stays on Top
As we approach the end of 2009, it's time for us to look back at the decade that was. While a decade is in the midst of occurring, you'll never really know how it was defined. As far as music is concerned, it's clear that this decade was defined by indie rock.
During the 1990s, it was definitely alternative music that ruled the airwaves, album sales, and filled up stadiums with concertgoers. This past decade, however, things changed during the early part of it. Indie rock became a big thing, and it still is almost ten years later.
With so many bands that were strong at the beginning of the decade still producing quality music, it's clear that the indie genre is far more expansive than nearly any musical movement we've seen in quite some time.
As far as the definition of indie rock is concerned, you might get a different answer if you ask any single music lover. Some would say that it's a frame of mind, and some might be more technical in saying that it means the band is signed to an independent label - or no label at all.
Maybe it just has to do with the creativity and the lack of regard for producing music that was made for radios and top 40 playlists.
Seeing as how things look as the decade comes to an end, there's no reason to believe that indie rock won't continue to be the preferred music genre of many music fans. There's no letting up at this point as bands continue to explore new ways to express themselves.
The music world couldn't be more grateful for this. More and more bands continue to fall into the indie music category as the decade nears its end, and it's clear that the indie rock movement will be at the forefront of the music scene for quite some time.
Just as classic rock made a deep footprint in the 1960s and the 1970s, indie rock may very well define the next decade too.
