Using A Cardboard Box To Make Fun Halloween Costumes

By Chris Channing

Halloween isn't always about having the most expensive costume, but rather one that takes creativity and skill to make. This is especially fun for youngsters, who like to help in the crafting of the costume. Cardboard boxes allow the creativity of a child or adults to be near limitless.

Cars are very popular when crafting a costume from a cardboard box. All you have to do is cut out a hole for the body, then attach straps so that you can carry the box on the shoulders. From there you can decorate and color the box as you see fit. You can also expand on the design to include other vehicles- such as a railroad boxcar to a full size monster truck.

If you prefer a flashy costume, you can make a robot instead. A robot is seen as made up of metal, so the idea here is to make a shiny surface on the box. One way to do this is to use special types of spraypaint. You may also get tin foil instead, and carefully wrap the tin foil around the box and fasten it with tape.

Creativity is the name of the game, but so far only basic costumes have been described. You could make a costume to be like a tree using a cardboard box- and it's probable you've never seen that before! The tree is harder to pull off, and you will need to make precise measurements. You can also decorate with real leaves, twigs, or bark to make the end result look more convincing.

If you can tap into a child's love for cartoons, any costume you make involving it will be a smash hit. One opportunity you have is to mimic the cartoon character known as SpongeBob. This character is part of a famous cartoon that features him in square pants. Since boxes are already square, you only need to decorate the box and find a way to keep it close to the waist of the child wearing the costume for Halloween.

A complex design will take a lot more work, but if you are up to the challenge you can try to make something such as a suit from the cartoon and movie known as Transformers. These robots are bulky and very complex, so you will have a great time learning how to duplicate the decorations onto a cardboard box. Look on the Internet to see how others did it, as otherwise you would be pulling your hair out in frustration.

Final Thoughts

The costume you ultimately decide on making is only going to be exceptional if you devote your full attention to it. If you don't have time to do so, you may be better off just buying a Halloween costume from the Internet instead.
