Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. It is the most famous cities in Africa politically and financially. It's humble beginning in 1899 as a simple railway depot linking Mombasa to Uganda, The town grew fast to become the capital of British East Africa in 1907 and eventually the capital of Free Kenyan republic in 1963. Nairobi actually means "The place of cool waters" however it is popularly known as "Green City in the Sun" for its dense tree cover and plenty of green spaces through out the city. Their famous park is Uhuru Park.

This park borders the central business district and the neighborhood Upper Hill. Uhuru Park is centre for outdoor speeches, services and rallies. 2004 Nobel Peace Price winner Wangari Maathai saved the park from being develop into a business area. Other notable open space includes the Central Park, Jeevanjee Gardens, City Park, Bomb Blast Memorial Park and Nairobi Arboretum.

Also workers from this place were hired for the Ugandan Railway project and they were accommodated in Nairobi. Once the Railway project was completed the city started to grow in other activities. For the sake of remembrance a Railway Museum has been created and even today it has its glamour. A collection of memorable photographs with different kinds of articles on railways are kept there for watching.

Nairobi off late has become an international city and is an economic hub too. As international businesses have their head quarters here the city is hosting its international visitors with their wonderful restaurants which are no less than their European or American counterparts. Great many organizations such as UNEP and UNHABITAT are having their base Office here.

Rich and poor. Nairobi, and perhaps Johannesburg in South Africa, is one of the few places in the world where the contrast between extreme poverty and extreme wealth is glaring. Cynics have called the city "Nairobbery" because of its high crime rate. As a result, tourists are advised to stay in relatively safe central Nairobi, and leave only on an official safari tour or to go to the airport.

The best of Nairobi. Most tourists go straight from the airport to a safari in the countryside, and so end up seeing little of Nairobi. Those interested in getting to know the city should visit the National Museum in addition to the Railway Museum. The National Museum has information about everything in Kenya, such as its lush flora and fauna, and the lifestyles of its indigenous peoples, the Masai in particular. The museum also exhibits work by the artist Joy Adamson (1910-1980). She's best known for her book Born Free about the rescue of the lioness Elsa, and her deep love for Africa comes through vividly in the exhibit.

Green Nairobi. Moi Avenue begins near the Railway Museum, and takes visitors directly into the center of Nairobi. The central business district is bookended by Uhuru Park and Central park, two large public green spaces. People rest and relax under the leafy trees in both, or stroll along gravel paths; Uhuru Park even has a small artificial lake. Environmentalist Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, organized a series of protest in 1989 to save Uhuru Park from development. Those that visit the Kenyan capital after experience the hard life of a safari will appreciate Nairobi's full service, Western-style hotels. Nairobi is ideal as a starting point for day trips and tours of Kenya's breathtaking national parks. Nairobi National Park, the nation's first founded in 1946, is just an 8 km trip from the city and occupies 12 square kilometers.
