Saltwater Tanks

By Kevin Eckstein
Nov 4, 2009
Saltwater tanks are aquariums that mimic an ocean atmosphere to support salt water fish as opposed to fresh water fish. Saltwater tanks are seen to be more difficult to maintain compared to freshwater tanks because they do not have much tolerance for fluctuations that are known to occur inside the closed environments of aquariums. If saltwater tanks are set up in the proper way, they operate like a self-supporting ecosystem.

Within this ecosystem that was artificially created, the various components depend upon each other to achieve stability. The moment a person commences fish keeping in saltwater they get involved in a balancing act that entails monitoring and maintaining a number of perimeters to keep the entire system's stability.

Stability presents a very crucial factor within saltwater tanks because any changes can make the fish sick. Temperature is another factor that determines whether the saltwater tank will be stable or not. The fish stand to get affected if the temperature changes. The tank's size is also another vital factor to consider as it contributes to the stability of the environment as well and here the bigger the better. One has three different choices of tanks.

Of the three kinds, one has a nitrogen cycle that is slightly longer and contains only fish. Water testing should be a regular practice within a tank entailing fish only.

A second type is one that is basically a combination of fish and rock. The rocks found inside the tanks have a big role to play which is to speed up the nitrogen production process and make the saltwater tank's environment easier. Basically, the rocks turn out to be the filtration system of the tank. The third type is the Reef tanks and the main features of this tank are the coral and the reef formations that are to be found inside the tank.

Life in these tanks can be sustained comfortably by the fish although they are not the key focus of the tanks. The Reef fish tanks are quite expensive and need much work as well. Nonetheless, the fish inside these tanks are the most beautiful. During the selection of a good saltwater tank its position in the home is one of the factors that should be taken into consideration as it determines the size of the tank that is going to be purchased. The saltwater tank's surface area is another factor to be considered.
