Top Ways to Get a Work From Home Job

Opportunities for work-at-home jobs continue to grow despite the struggling economy as employers learn how cost-effective home based employees can be. But for job hunters, looking for legitimate jobs is tricky and many end up finding only scams. The trick to getting a work-at-home job is to understand that these jobs are like traditional jobs in that you need the skills and experience the position requires. You won't simply sign-up (for a fee) and have a work-at-home job.

Here's some tips on how to get a work-at-home job:

1) Turn your current job into a work-at-home job.

The best way to do this is to first evaluate your job and the company to determine if working at home is an option. What duties can you do from home? Does the company have flexible work options?

The work-at-home proposal must be written and must outline your plans as well as benefits to the company your new work arrangement will provide. Propose a work schedule and provide
information on how and when you will be available to your employer and coworkers. What equipment will you need and who will provide it? How will your work be evaluated? Show
your supervisor how working at home has been successful in other companies by including statistics or articles on telecommuting.

Be sure to focus on the benefits working at home will be to the company. Your boss doesn't care about your child care hassles, but he'd probably be interested in saving money.

2) Suggest a Work At Home Option

I landed my current telecommuting job by sending letters of introduction along with a resume to businesses in my state inquiring if they needed contract workers in my area.

Start by sending your professional introduction and resume to companies that are already advertising for jobs in your field. In your letter, suggest a contract position and include information on how such arrangements can save the company money over hiring a regular employee.

You can also target similar businesses and industries that may not be advertising. Use your phone book and Internet to find companies in your area or state that might be willing to contract with you and send them your letter and resume.

While its much easier to turn an existing job into a work-at-home job, sometimes that's not an option. When searching for a work-at-home job, remember that these employers are looking for people that have skills and experience to fill a specific position. Its these positions that they advertise, not "work at home".

Its much easier to turn an existing job into a work-at-home job than getting hired to work from home. But if you're boss won't let you work from home, you can find jobs online. Its important to remember that employers are not looking for home-based workers to sign-up and do menial work. They are looking for people that have skills and experience to fill a specific position. They advertise these positions on job search sites. You can still find scams and business opportunities on job sites. But you won't find legitimate jobs in search engines, so you need to stick to career sites to search for work.

When a job appeals to you, follow the directions for applying. One complaint employers have is how applicants don't follow the instructions. Prepare and submit a professional resume or application tailored to fit the requirements of the job.

I believe everyone can work at home, but it takes research and effort. The key to success is to use your current resources, tap into your skills and assets, look for jobs in the right places, and submit quality resumes on a regular basis.
