MMA Fights: Bringing Martial Arts to a Whole New Level

Mixed Martial Arts is the newest wave in the fight scene. What fascinates avid fans of this full contact sport generates a certain degree of rabid excitement that fully engages the viewer. Viewers are so engaged that some of them even want to join in the fight.

Mixed martial arts (or MMA) requires a knowledge and expertise on a combination of striking and grappling. These styles may either be done while one or two of the opponents are standing up or lying down.

Anyone who has a certain level of expertise in any kind of martial arts is welcome to join and be a contender. However, one must know the rules first, because it can get quite confusing and you may even forget the certain styles or moves apply while some do not.

Although MMA started as a no holds-barred, no limits kind of sport, it has refined into having a set of specified rules and weight classes. MMA has nine such weight classes. Gloves with small holes for the fingers were also introduced to prevent cuts and protect the fists during punches. A time limit was also imposed - for professional fights, it would usually have 5 minutes per round, with 3 to 5 rounds per fight. Other prohibitions (depending on where you are) include a no head butt, no elbow policy. The use of the knees also faced some limitations.

The winner of the fight must either get his opponent to submit, knock him out or have officials say that the easier is over. A fight is stopped only by the fight doctor (when there are injuries), the referee (when an opponent cannot intelligently defend himself), and the opponent's corner man (this is done by throwing the towel).

With fight stoppage, the judges will decide who has won. This is called a technical knockout. When a competitor gives up the fight through submission, he has to tap on the floor or the competitor's body or announce verbally that he is submitting.
