Understanding The Symptoms Of Depression In Men

By Trevor Johnson
Nov 5, 2009
Clinical Depression was once considered a woman's ailment, but the fact is that millions of men suffer from this affliction as well. Men are far less likely to talk to someone about how they are feeling than women. They also are less likely to seek help. Understanding symptoms of depression in men is key to proper diagnosis.

Men are expected to be the "stronger" sex and have a difficult time admitting that there is an emotional problem. They tend to deny their feelings and only focus on the physical symptoms of this illness. It is very important that men learn to recognize the symptoms of depression and to seek medical attention.

The most typical indicators of depression in men are anger, fatigue, and low self esteem. These symptoms are quite opposite to the complaints of women who are suffering from depression. Many men are improperly diagnosed because it is harder to recognize.

Men may experience a loss of sexual drive and this only adds to their feelings of worthlessness. They see this as a failure and an indication of their manhood. This could not be any further from the truth. It is a medical condition that is caused from their depression.

Men often have a hard time opening up about their inner thoughts. They get agitated easily and tend to be very hard on their loved ones. Alcohol and drugs only worsen the situation. Many may become violent and abusive. Depression not only affects you, but also everyone around you.

Men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women. This high suicide rate could be accelerated due to improper diagnosis or untreated depression. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, it is important to be seen by your doctor as soon as possible.

It is important to remember that depression is a medical condition and one that needs to be treated. It is not something that only women experience and it is definitely not a failure in any way. There is no shame in seeking medical treatment.
