Role Of A GFCI Outlet In Ensuring Electrical Safety
Ignoring the importance of electrical protective devices may invite a possible hazard in your home. The devices such as electrical fuses, breaker boxes, GFCI receptacles etc. complete your electrical safety schema.
When it comes to the safety of the spaces of the home where water is most certain to come in contact with the electricity such as bathrooms, lawns, kitchens, garages etc. then devices known as GFCI receptacles prove quite handy.
The GFCI outlets (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) are placed on the wall just like the normal electrical outlets. But unlike the typical outlets, they cut off the electricity as soon as an imbalance is noticed between the active wire and the neutral wire.
If water makes a contact to the outlet then an imbalance is notified owing to a certain amount of current passing through the water. This trips off the GFCI circuit and the electricity supply is immediately hampered preventing any hazard.
A GFCI outlet consists of a 'test' and a 'reset' button. In order to monitor the working of the receptacle, press the 'test' button. A tripping of the circuit would confirm the efficiency of the outlet. Press the 'reset' button thereafter to render normal state to the circuit. If however the circuit has tripped but the light on the outlet continues to glow then a mis-wiring is detected in the socket. Any such irregularity should be fixed immediately. Sometimes minor problems are encountered while restoring the previous condition of the circuit as well.
If the GFCI outlet is installed in a circuit to which other outlets and electrical devices are also wired then the tripping of the GFCI receptacle would mean a breakdown in the operation of the devices lying after the GFCI outlet in the circuit. However there will not be any deterring in the proceedings of the electrical components falling prior to the GFCI.
The 'reset' button often malfunction due to lack of voltage reception from the main power supply. Do not replace the outlet in that case and wait for an upsurge in the voltage reception.
If however the working and the benefits of the GFCI outlets still leave you with some doubts then an opinion from an expert can be availed.
