Asthma Wheezing Treatment By Controlling Breathing

In the first "Terminator" film, there was a scene where lead actor's character seemed to have been badly wounded. The leading lady was quick to point it out, to which the leading man replied "Pain can be controlled". For some, it provoked some thought. Maybe pain CAN be controlled. Maybe, if we just have the will, we can shut away feelings of pain. Maybe we can will our illnesses, our asthma, away just like a placebo. But alas, it cannot be done by sheer will alone. There is one method, though, that came really close.

The Buteyko Method is the breathing technique developed by the late Russian doctor with the name of Konstantin Buteyko. Buteyko associated breathing issues with being ill. His hypothesis was that if we learn to control our breathing when we are ill, we can reverse the illness itself. Buteyko researched for breathing techniques from yoga, developed his own, and started applying it in hospitals. Word got out after a foreigner was successfully treated using the Buteyko method. When he came back to his homeland, he spread the good news.

The breathing method that Buteyko developed is no accepted in the medical realm as a valid treatment for asthma. Due to the lack of need for pharmaceutical drugs, Buteyko is still branded as an alternative treatment. The asthmatics of today may find the Buteyko method a little confusing due to the fact that it has shifted and changed over the years. There now exist a variety of styles for the Buteyko method, although the core principles are still the same.

Even if the Buteyko method isn't even technically considered medicine, it is a very useful tool for asthmatics. It can certainly help minimize, if not relieve, asthma attacks. But being approved does not mean that an asthmatic rely on it alone. Alternative treatments are best used as supplements to the medicines prescribed by your doctor. For the Buteyko method, it should be used to attempt not to use the inhaler, but always keep an inhaler nearby if it does not work.

There are other breathing techniques that were developed for treating asthma. Some of them are also to induce a state of relaxation, such as Pranayama. Pranayama is also a yoga derivative. But at the moment, Buteyko is a tested and proven method to help keep asthma and its symptoms under control.
