Tips For Choosing The Right Kit For Wooden Sheds

If you're looking for the ultimate backyard storage solution, then you most likely know of wooden sheds. And, unless you plan on building one from scratch using a shed plan, then your best option is to buy a wooden shed kit. With so many manufacturers out there, its not a easy choice. Fortunately, there are a few considerations to keep in mind that will help make your decision a little easier.

Materials Used by the Manufacturer

If you are looking for REAL wood for your wooden shed, then the best manufacturers use a hardwood such as redwood or cedar. Cedar is especially resistant to rot and insects. For these reasons, furniture makers have been building clothes chests and outdoor furniture from cedar for centuries. Although wooden sheds made from cedar can be painted, their natural beauty is best left alone by using a high-quality water sealant.

By using the best quality wood, you will have a very durable and strong shed that can withstand severe weather (such as high winds and heavy snow).

Ease of Assembly

Some manufacturers offer wooden shed kits that are completely cut so that no additional cutting is required. Others have kits that are mostly cut but still require additional cutting once you start construction. Most all manufacturers supply highly detailed instructions.

Other things to look for are pre-assembled doors and windows (optional, of course). By having everything already cut by the manufacturer, you are assured that everything will be square and fit together properly. This makes for a weekend project that is both fun and easy.

Design

Design is so important, and not just for appearances. The amount of space inside the shed can be increased dramatically by its height and by the type of roof it has. A shed with a gambrel roof (one that looks like a barn) actually has an extra pitch that gives it a lot more overhead storage space. From an engineering point of view, a well-designed wooden shed will be extra strong.

So to recap, three important things to look for if you are about to purchase a wooden shed kit, are the materials that the manufacturer uses in their kits, how easy it is to assemble (with detailed instructions), and the design of the shed.
