How To Plan The Lighting For Children's Bedrooms

By Arthur Davis
Nov 5, 2009
When parents enthusiastically take up the task of decorating their child's bedroom they take great trouble while choosing the furniture, carpets and colours but leave the choice and placement of lights to the very end. This is the wrong way to approach the task. By carefully planning the lighting you will have a room with a cheerful and cozy feel and won't be left with messy wires running along the floors.

Begin by making a note of all the light points in the room. The next step is to chalk out the layout of the room. You have to decide where you want to place the bed. Figure out whether a bedside table will be better on the right or left of the bed, whether you want to add a floor lamp and where the study desk and wardrobes should be. Now check if the light points are close to where you want to place the desk, bedside table etc. If some points need to be moved or new ones have to be added, do so now before you proceed to painting or putting wallpaper on the walls.

A children's room should be bright and cheerful, not dim and dreary. Begin by choosing the ceiling lights. These lights are usually placed in the centre of the ceiling or in the centre of the activity area. Ceiling lights will provide general lighting in the room.

A desk lamp should be used for task lighting. The lamp should cast light on the pages of your child's book so that they can read or write without straining their eyes at night. The wattage of the bulb should be chosen accordingly.

If your child is very young then you may also need a night lamp. Use a low wattage bulb so that it provides a sense of security to the child without casting harsh light on their eyes.

Bedside lamps can be great for older children who like to read in bed. The choice and style of lamps can also add a delightful accent to the decor of the room.

More than the ceiling lights it's the table lamps and floor lamps that will dictate the mood and ambience of a room. So make sure you choose them with care and use the right wattage bulbs.

Once you have planned everything, then proceed with decorating your kid's room. It's something all parents love to undertake.
