Cutting Glass With Professionalism

Glass cutting may look difficult due to the risk of injury or wastage of material, but its child's play when done properly under good supervision.

Glass is used in making sliding shutters in showcases and window panes. It decorates the dining table and also the drawing table by taking different shapes. Cutting a clear glass of 1/8" thickness is the simplest job that can be tried initially.

A person who needs to cut glass must study the dimensions carefully. Lengthy cuts cannot be easily done and the piece should be 6" wide enough perpendicular to the cutting line. The presence of silica in between the surfaces of two glass plates makes one slide over the other so the surface has to be cleaned before cutting is started.

He must have a glass cutter which looks like a pencil with a wheel and has a diamond point. Cutting oil or turpentine can be used on the glass cutter to have a smooth glass cutting operation. The person has to align the wheel according to the scoring line with the help of a ruler and apply pressure on the glass as the cutter is pulled along the surface.

The cutting edge has to run from one end to the other end of the glass. A soft sound resembling that of ripping silk is heard during glass cutting. The opposite side of the cut edge should be tapped by the cutter handle. As a precautionary measure, the glass should be held by wearing a protective hand glove to avoid splinters and slivers.
