How To Repair A Septic System ?

By Scott Rodgers
Nov 6, 2009
The traditional septic systems still continue to uphold the sewage setup of many households. Though the septic system calls for regular maintenance and look after, they continue to be quite simpler in apparatus and hence easier to repair.

The septic systems make way for lesser maintenance cost as compared to the typical sewage pipelines. The septic tanks which are often made up of concrete or plastic, collect all the said waste and decays it with the biological action of bacteria. It is well assisted by a drain field that discharges the overflowing water from the tank to the soil. The tanks are often planted in the ground.

In order to ensure longevity of your septic system, the septic tank must be subjected to regular maintenance and inspection work. In addition, the local surroundings would not get polluted due to the malfunctioning of the tank.

Kick off the campaign by observing the water level in the tank. If it is high then a potential clog is suspected either in the pipe leaving the tank or in the drain field. Take a plumber's snake and insert it into the line leading from the tank to the drain field. If the snake tool comes back with a bit of a mud on it's head then it is concluded that the drain field is broken. That calls for the immediate replacement of the drain field.

In case the drain field looks as normal as ever then the accumulation of mud, scum or other foreign materials at the bottom of the tank could be paving way for the trouble. A full-fledged pumping operation has to be undertaken to clear out all the matter from the tank that is obstructing the smooth functioning of your septic system.

Keep a good idea about the soil condition that envelops your septic tank. The sandy soils support the setup a bit longer than the clay soils. Make it habitual to notify yourself about the soil state around the septic tank.

Nowadays commercial chemicals (or enzymes) are also employed to unclog the septic tank and the associated drain field. However such chemicals call for extra precautions during their application as they are very harmful.

If however you are still not able to diagnose the problem with your septic tank then the services of an expert have to be availed to bail you out of trouble.
