What Is A Dry Erase Board Calendar?
As a mother of two children things can get pretty crazy in my home. A typical weekend for both my husband and me would be filled with activities. But something was always going wrong, we were either late for an appointment, forgot to pick someone up on time or just plain old forgetting to do something important altogether. After a while we decided to take an active role in holding out household plans together, and we invested in a relatively simple dry erase board calendar.
I decided to use this method after one ultra crazy Saturday. I went online and searched for ways to organize my family life and read about some other's experiences with their own dry erase board calendars. To me this works like using plastic storage containers to organize your closet, only with this you are organizing the lives of you and your children.
The toughest part of using dry erase board calendars is selling the idea to your kids and getting them to use it. Bring it up to them when they are in a good mood so they will be more willing to listen, and even participate. My approach was to pitch the concept like an advertisement. Personally I have yet to meet a child that jumps for joy at the thought of being organized, much less making a schedule of their lives. I made it a point to stress on the many times that I made them late for practice or how I forgot to pick their friends for sleep overs. You need to make your children feel as if the calendar is the key to you doing things for them on time, every time. Even if that may not always be true.
Dry erase boards are really wonderful because you can basically erase and write in things as they happen. You do not need to waste paper, or use a pencil so that you can erase what you've written. You can always erase with these boards whenever you need to. It's time to get organized. Get everyone involved by making an outline of the days in the week and what will be happening on them. Start with the important activities; soccer practice, rehearsals, meetings, trips out of town, class schedules and so on.
Getting your whole family up and into the spirit is not as easy as it may sound, and they will not be open to it at all at the start. However once your family gets into the habit of using this method, you will wonder how you ever lived without one.
