Hair Transplant Cost and Grafting Techniques

By Tim Vincent

Hair surgery has come of age. New techniques prove that small is beautiful when it comes to transplants. The littler the element of transplant the better the end result. This is because the follicles can be located in a very precise way. The effect of modern surgery can be very dynamic indeed and it can now be almost impossible to detect if somebody has had a transplant. The only transplants you will see are the badly done ones.

As with everything there is a cost as you have to pay for the adeptness and time of the specialist involved. However the transplanting of smaller follicle units takes a lot more effort and this is reflected in the costs involved. It is possible to transplant hairs one at a time. This would give excellent precision in how they are placed in the scalp and would give results that absolutely could not be noticed as surgery at all. The downside of this is that it would take a very long time and hair transplant cost would be large. Added to this is the fact that it would also be very hard to make the hair thick enough as there would have to be bigger gaps between different surgically placed hairs.

Hair restoration surgery therefore involves a compromise between small hair grafts to give unidentifiable areas of high quality and other areas of larger grafts to give extra body to the hair. These bigger grafts also cut down the charges as well. usually micro grafts consist of scalp tissue containing only three or four follicles. These are used for the quality work needed in the hairline at the front of the head. This is the place that will be noticed by other persons the greatest. If the quality here is bad then it will be obvious that a transplant has been done. The hairs have to lie in the correct direction in a natural way. They also have to blend seamlessly with any existing hair as well.

In the other thinning areas of the scalp larger grafts can be used. These are called mini grafts. These typically have around twelve follicles. They can be used to give greater bulk to the hair and because they aren't as apparent as the hairline they don't have to be as accurate as the micro grafts. Never the less they are orientated as naturally as practicable. Surounding these areas it is typical to use the micro grafts so that the larger mini grafts aren't noticable to the onlooker.

Placing the grafts into the scalp involves either punching small holes into the scalp or slicing slits with a scalpel. The grafts are accurately placed in the openings at the correct angles and relation to other grafts. The aim is to make certain that when the hair grows it does so in as natural a way as possible. It is still hard to cut the slits the correct depth.

Specialists are now trying with pulsed lasers to slice out the donor grafts and to cut the holes for the placement of the grafts. There are a number of patents that have been established involving these techniques. It is hoped that lasers used in this way will be more precise in cutting the skin and that this will give less scarring. The laser also has the effect of coagulating the blood in the wounds as the cutting is done. This has the benefit of lessening bleeding and pain. The precise nature of the cuts means that there is a finer fit once the grafts are implanted.
