Summer is a good opportunity to make some changes to your surroundings, since the kids will be at home for much of the day. Small adjustments can really improve your living room, or even your family room or basement. These changes will give your family togetherness and will give the kids a great place to entertain their friends. It may even inspire you to start a weekly game and dinner gathering with neighbors! Try these great ideas and transform your home from common to fun in no time!

Get Rid of the Excess and Plan Your Space

Start your room makeover by getting rid of trash. Get rid of everything that is our of place. If you have a desk in the room, go through the filing system, desk drawers and book shelves and get rid of the excess items that you aren't using or that should be thrown away. After doing that, create a system for your filing area that will help keep everything in its own place from now on. For instance, if you have photos that had been stored in a drawer, then you could buy a few photo boxes and divide them into periods of time so each box doesn't get too full. Digitizing your pictures is another option that make more efficient use of physical space.

Double Function Means Saved Space

Choose furniture that is practical and can serve a double function in the room. For instance, a corner TV stand with storage underneath can easily stow away your DVDs and CDs out of view. Alternately, you can also get a coffee table that opens up, such as a rectangular box shape, where book and games can be stored. Another helpful style for coffee tables is the type of table that lifts up and can turn into a dining table for eating. This eliminates the need for a both a storage chest and a dining table.

Create a Room that Suits Your Needs

If your room serves different purposes, such as a play room, TV room, and laundry room in one, consider segregating portions of the room for each activity to give yourself as much area as possible. One option is to cover and divide with a thick wall tapestry and a hanging rod so that the area can be out of sight when it's not being used. Pick out a fabric that is more neutral to avoid attracting attention to the separation. A hanging tapestry that is easy on the eyes with threaded designs looks very nice and adds to any room. Be sure to choose elegant curtain rod ends to adorn your area!

Don't Forget Whimsy and Novelty

Add fun items to the room that create whimsy and establish a theme. You might look for a novelty glass lamp to go with whatever theme you've decided for the room. For example, a Victorian-themed room would go great with a vintage Tiffany-style lamp. Additionally, a good game tabletop can add many hours of play time for indoor family fun. Choose an all-in-one game table that has the types of games your family likes to play; many different options are available from air hockey to table tennis. With some creativity and effort, you can transform your basement, TV room, or living room into an entertainment area that provides you with fun and quality time together!
