The Notebook Miracle

By Matthew Kerridge
Nov 6, 2009
A while back, it occurred to me that there was a much bigger world out there; I was getting restless. I had lived my entire life in the same country, and I wanted to experience more. I would move to a new country. At the same time, I decided that I would take along only those belongings that would fit in four suitcases; everything else would have to go. This decision would change my life. Along the way, it also converted me from a desktop PC user to a notebook user.

One of the items I considered absolutely necessary to take with me for a successful move was my PC. It contained all the important e-mails I had sent and received in my life, as well as my financial records and other critical information. In addition, the PC was how I intended to earn a living in my new home. But the desktop, monitor, keyboard, and mouse were incredibly bulky and heavy and I despaired of being able to transport them safely inside my luggage. The solution was obvious -- I needed to replace my PC with a notebook.

I researched the major brands and models of notebook available, picked one from a reputable manufacturer that met my needs, and bought it online. Then I faced the task of moving all of my personalized files from my old PC to the much more compact notebook.

This task was made easy by a program that I downloaded, which prompted me as it transported the files from desktop to notebook. Mission accomplished! Now I had a notebook with which I could do everything I could previously do on my desktop, but which took up far less space. It even incorporated the keyboard, display, and mouse, so I wouldn't need to bring those. But I also had a revelation that the notebook could do even more for me.

I realized that there were other things I wanted to bring with me, things that had never been stored on my PC but which could be added to the notebook -- digital (or digitizable) information of any kind, such as documents, music, and photographs. Inspired, I loaded all the music I owned onto the notebook, and scanned all the paperwork and photographs I wanted to bring. These digital copies now took the place of all my CDs, record albums, cassettes, shoeboxes full of photos, and files of papers.

To me, it was a miracle. My notebook was just the same size as it was when I had first purchased it, but now in that compact space it held the contents of hundreds of bulky items that I no longer needed to worry about trying to bring with me. I never needed to decide which pieces of music I couldn't live without; I would be able to bring it all.

After that marathon effort loading a good portion of my life's essential elements onto that wondrously small box, I continued my planning and preparation, and eventually made the big move. In hindsight, I can easily say that it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. And truly, the notebook was the miracle that made it possible.
