Smaller And More Powerful: The New Notebook Computers Make Your Computing Portable

By Connor Sullivan
Nov 6, 2009
Computers are getting smaller and smaller. The new notebooks are a great invention, and they are getting even smaller. An important secret to the smaller size is the touch screen. With the invention of multi touch technology, the keyboard no longer needs actual keys. It can take the form of a touch screen. Yes, this little notebook has an entire QWERTY keyboard without keys. And its nine-inch size allows it to be slipped into your pocket for easy access wherever you can find wi-fi. No need to schlep a bulky briefcase or computer bag (man purse).

Picture yourself being able to get online anywhere. You go into Starbucks, open up your notebook, and there you are. The world is at your fingertips. Check your RSS feeds to find out what your favorite bloggers have to say today while you sip your designer coffee and munch a little something sweet. No need to fight with a limp newspaper. It's all on the tiny screen of your notebook. Do you agree or disagree with your favorite writers? Add your comments. Even better, become a blogger yourself. Who cares that no one may read it? It is still out there and, who knows? Maybe someone somewhere will stumble across it in their voyage through cyberspace.

Then, when you are finished with the blogs, you can turn your attention to Facebook. So many valuable minutes can be wasted on Facebook. What's up with your friends today? Just hope it isn't cluttered up with messages such as "Woke up with a headache. Have to go to work now." Equally dull is something like "It is 85* already and going to be a hot one." Refrain from saying anything this boring. Say something unexpected. One of my favorites of all time was the entry by the mother of twin toddlers who said she overheard one say to the other during naptime, "Close your eyes and dance like a monkey." Need more time wasters? Facebook has innumerable games and quizzes to distract you.

Maybe you're not in Starbucks to waste time. Good for you. You can get work done while you are there. Read your email. Keep in touch with the latest activities in the office and with your customers. You can most likely even remote into your desktop at work and do some actual work. The screen is small on the notebook, but you can manage. The resolution these days gives precision. You can even read entire web pages on a phone. If you are a freelance writer or translator, you can easily do this type of work on a notebook. You don't even need wi-fi until it's time to send in your work. You want to do a little bit of work in a public wi-fi zone because you are probably going stircrazy staring at your same four walls with no company but the cat. But don't get sucked into too much people watching or, worse, get sucked into a conversation. Keep your attention on your task.

The world is better for the fact that computers are getting smaller but more powerful. Just don't fritter away too much of your valuable time.
