Wristwatches are an important element in the list of fashion stuff; no list is complete if it is left out. The use of watch has crossed all boundaries associated with its traditional use. It is now one of the most important fashion apparel that can be seen in the market today. For status conscious people, this has become another symbol to show off their status. Watches are worn today for many reasons apart from its traditional reason of just being an instrument of telling time.

The watches of today are more delicate when it comes to precision, durability, and style. Watches serves many purposes to many people depending upon their requirements, some people use it for their technical features, while other may use it for its style, and beauty, thus, whatever the reason may be, they are willing to pay the maximum to get their desired stuff.

The history of wristwatch dates back to the year 1868, when Patek Philippe, now known as its inventor, made the first watch. Wristwatches were known to be the part of the jewellery that women wear. In addition, for men, there used to be pocket watches that they used to carry around with them. This concept prevailed until the First World War. During the time of the war, the men realised that keeping and using a pocket watch is not at all a comfortable thing, and they could have been better off with a wristwatch.

Louis Cartier brought the conventional design of wristwatches that we see and wear today. He had created a watch for Santos Dumont, a flying inaugural hero. The year 1911 marks the general sale of such a watch. The very category of watch turned into the blueprint of the type of wristwatches we wear today.

The shape of the dial started to modify from the conventional classic round shape. Other brands started to evolve, apart from classical Cartier wristwatch. These brands had attributes concerning design and shape. Movado launched the "polyplan" design watch, while Patek Philippe released the rectangular shaped watch, which got much fame and recognition. This was called "clock reference n.1953"

The designs and styles of the watches brought a change to the watch market after 1913. Armoured car design was introduced in the models. Taking inspiration from this Patek Philippe introduced their 'gondola' design, and Louis Cartier introduced their 'tank' design.

Amongst the many names in the watch market, was one of Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constanin. The watches were now available with advanced and developed features. These watches were capable to keep track of lunar phases, months and days.

When it comes to watches, the name of Rolex cannot be ignored. Rolex made its mark in the watch market in 1920s. The first launch of this brand was the very elegant and sophisticated Rolex Prince. This watch was equipped with dual time feature. The second sector was larger than the minutes one, and this quality gathered much attention. Several other watches were launched and until now, advancements and differentiation amongst them is witnessed.
