Mrs. Doubtfire: Warm and gratifying comedy with earnest overtones in reference to a free spirit whose spouse divorces him after fourteen years. He couldn't bear being split apart from his 3 kids, so he camouflages himself as a dowdy British housekeeper (under an Oscar quality makeup job) and gets himself employed to look after them. Williams is in top form, and director Columbus keeps the tale and characters moderately practical in an effort to drive home a humanistic message. Cast includes Robin Williams, Sally Territory, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Polly Holliday, Lisa Jakob, Matthew Lawrence, and Mara Wilson. (125 minutes, 1993)
Adios, Sabata: A gunslinger becomes involved with Mexican revolutionaries. He helps himself to a box full of gold during the voyage. Adios Sabata (with Brynner rather than Lee Van Cleef) was titled Indio Black till dubbed and re-titled for U.S. viewing. Cast includes Yul Brynner, Dean Reed, Pedro Sanchez, and Gerard Herter. Directed by Blunt Kramer (1970-Western-l04 minutes)
Sentimental Journey: Maudlin yam of dying actress O'Hara adopting a small child to give spouse Payne a friend while she is gone; no holds barred here. Movie was redone as "The Present of Love" and for a 1984 Television film. Cast includes John Payne, Maureen O'Hara, William Bendix, Cedric Hardwicke, Glenn Langan, Mischa Auer, and Connie Marshall. Dying Young: Aimless youthful lady replies to a newspaper ad and becomes nurse/friend to a 28-year old rich kid who's stricken with leukemia. Eventually they fall in love. As perfect stage for Roberts' charms and as love tale it has its good moments. Cast includes Julia Roberts, Scott, Vincent Donofrio, David Selby, and Ellen Bursty. (105 minutes, 1991)
