Use A Reflective Dog Collar To Save Your Friend
Pets sometimes escape from the most responsible of owners. They may break free from a leash or slip through an open door. If the escape happens at night, then your dog is in great danger. If he runs into the street, cars may not see him in time to stop and avoid hitting the pet. You can increase your pet's chances of survival in these instances by fitting him with a reflective dog collar. This little collar may allow drivers to see your pet in time to stop.
It is estimated that one in five persons has hit a pet with their vehicle. Twenty-five percent of the persons who hit a dog or cat do not stop to check on the pet or report it. Millions of pets die on the road each year and many have been left to suffer.
As a responsible dog owner, consider giving your dog a reflective dog collar. The collars are very affordable and help to keep pets visible to vehicles from a safe distance. Use of these collars may give drivers the needed one hundred to six hundred feet required to stop a vehicle and avoid hitting your pet. Dogs with dark fur benefit most from these collars, but they are useful to all pets. Pets with reflective collars are more visible than those without the collars.
You will find a couple of types of collars that are both called reflective dog collars. The first is a truly reflective material. It uses prisms embedded in the material and is like the safety vests used by street workers.
A second type of collar, sometime sold as reflective is actually a phosphorescent collar. These glow-in-the-dark collars absorb light and re-emit it even if there is other light present. The problem with these type of collars is that they must be charged by some time in the light and they give off their light after a few hours. If your dog has been sleeping in the dark, the collar may not have enough of a charge to allow it to be seen in the dark.
There are also reflective leashes which match the collars. The additional reflection makes it easier for drivers to see you as well as your pet in the dark.
When pets get loose after dark, its reflective collar can help you to locate the pet. Remember not to chase a loose dog. Grab a favorite treat and call the dog to you. Chasing a pet in the dark can cause it to run into the danger of the street.
Make sure that you have a current ID tag attached to your pets collar so that you can be called if the pet is found away from home.
Even though you have a reflective collar, remember that you should always supervise your pet when it is off the leash. Never let him run loose unattended. The reflective collar can help you to find a hurt pet to get him the help that is needed.
