So You Want a Classical Music Record Deal

By Arthur Cundy
Nov 7, 2009
Regardless of the genre of music that you play, every musicians dream is to one day have a record deal that will allow them to live their dream. If it was easy, every musician would be able to get one. However, if you are in search of getting a classical music record deal, there are some things that you can do to give yourself a better chance.

The most obvious thing that you are going to have to take care of is creating a demo for circulation. For the best product, you should have it done professionally. If you are challenged with your budget, you may be able to work with a studio to utilize their off times to save some money. While you may be recording at 3:00am, you will be doing it for far less than you would pay for premium hours.

The music is only one portion of the demo as you still need to make sure that the packaging is just as impressive as what is inside. You would be surprised at how many musicians do nothing more than throw something on a CD and stick it in a plain case to send off. Doing something like this screams that you don't really care and cannot be taken seriously.

The next piece of the puzzle is your press kit. If you are not familiar with them, it should include a nice headshot, a brief bio and some interesting facts about your musical career. If you have performed publicly or served as a session musician on someone else's album, do not be shy about including it at this point. The more you have about your experiences, the better off you are going to be.

The next step is to do some research on labels to find out exactly who is interested in signing young classical talent and who is reputable. There are a lot of small labels out there that specialize in entry level talent and then hand it off to bigger labels if it starts to take off. This is all part of the business, but you want to make sure that these labels are legitimate and not just trying to swindle you.

Once you know who you want to send your demo to, you are going to have to reach out to them and make sure that they are willing to accept your tape. Most companies will not take anything that is unsolicited and you will be wasting time and money by sending things out this way. It may work differently in the movies, but this is real life and this is how you have to go about it.

It may seem like a lot of work, but you are talking about your musical future here. You cannot just expect a classical music record deal to fall right in your lap. If you follow the steps that we have presented here though, you may find that the road to getting a signed contract may not be as hard because you have presented a quality product that gets noticed. At this point, your talent will have to do the rest of the work for you.
