Fishing is one of America's favorite outdoor sports and there are many different lures that can be used to snag the catch of the day. Most lures are plastic and can be bought at any local department store. Another type that is very popular is the wooden lure. These types of lures can be purchased or the fisherman can learn how to make wooden freshwater fishing lures out of everyday items such as an aluminum can and a peg type clothes pin.

These quick and easily made lures can be used in either freshwater or saltwater, although it tends to work better in the first mentioned. Follow these steps to create a wooden lure with a personal touch.

1. Cut open and flatten an aluminum can. With thick gloves, cut the can into a square sheet of aluminum.

2. With shears sharp enough for sheet metal, cut spoon shaped pieces from the sheet of aluminum. They should taper on the end and a variety of sizes is suggested. These pieces should resemble a small fish such as a minnow.

3. Next, cut small cuts in the head of the clothespin. The cuts should be about a half an inch deep and able to hold the metal spoons in place. With a quick drying adhesive, such as Super Glue, fix the aluminum pieces in the cuts and glue them.

4. A hole can be drilled on the bottom side of the lure for placement of the hook. Any hook can be used. Use the same glue to hold them in place.

5. Cut the legs off of the peg style clothes pin. After drilling a hole from one side of the front of the lure, add beads with a straight pin to create eyes on the fish.

6. Next step is to paint the lure. Bright colors such as orange and red seem to attract more fish that the duller colors.

The freedom of experimentation is just one of the advantages to creating unique wooden freshwater fishing lures that can be used for years to come. Be careful when making this type of lure. Use thick gloves when handling and forming sheet metal.
