Hemorrhoid Surgery
Oftentimes, hemorrhoids will resolve on their own especially when you treat them as soon as possible with home treatments like high-fiber diet, herbal preparations, and water therapy as well as moderate exercise. There are cases, however, when the hemorrhoids are so severe that surgical hemorrhoid cures are necessary.
Before you decide that hemorrhoid surgery is the way to go, though, make sure you discuss all available options with your physician. It's much better to have this surgery when you're fully aware of the benefits and risks as compared to being ignorant when you go under the knife. So for example, when you're trying to make a decision, ask the following:
-Explore all surgical options available. -Why is one hemorrhoid surgery beneficial as compared to another? -What is the impact on postoperative care with each type of surgery available? -Will the surgery be covered by insurance? How much will it cost? -Has the doctor performing your particular type of procedure done a lot of these types of operations? What is the success rate with this particular doctor?
No matter how embarrassing you think questions might be, ask them. You're the patient and you're the one who's going to be paying for this procedure (physically as well as financially, as applicable).
If you decide on hemorrhoid surgery, your doctor will discuss how to cure your hemorrhoids with surgery when you are having presurgery consultations. Especially if the hemorrhoid is external, less invasive procedures may be desirable. If a hemorrhoid is internal, though, a more invasive hemorrhoid surgery may be necessary.
Rubber band ligation has been a proven technique for second-degree internal piles. Basically, what is done is that the base of the hemorrhoid is tied off and its blood supply cut off. It falls off through normal bowel movements within 2 to 7 days. It has a success rate of 60 to 80%, which makes it one of the most successful procedures to cure hemorrhoids.
Another technique is sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is performed when a corrosive agent is injected into the hemorrhoid to shrink it and ultimately cut off its blood supply as well. This is a more serious procedure than rubber band ligation, and has complications like thrombophlebitis and visual disturbances.
Stapled hemorrhoidopexy has the surgeon inserting a hollow tube inside the anus, thus pushing hemorrhoidal tissue back in place and cutting off the inflamed hemorrhoid protrusions with a stapling method. This is only applicable to severe cases because it is quite radical.
Fourth, Doppler ligation involves tying off the artery that feeds the inflamed hemorrhoid, thus, causing it to shrink. This is one of the quickest surgical hemorrhoid cures. The bleeding immediately stops and you can go home on the same day as the surgery with little post-operative care necessary.
Finally, hemorrhoidectomy is the most painful of the surgical hemorrhoidal cures, requiring pretty extensive postoperative care and prescription strength painkillers. It can take up to a month for patients to recover from this type of hemorrhoid surgery. However, again, only the most severe cases are suitable for the hemorrhoidectomy.
Although surgery for hemorrhoids may not be your first choice, it may become necessary if they are impacting your quality of life negatively. This is especially true if natural cures for hemorrhoids are not taking care of the problem adequately. If this is true, though, and you do need to undergo surgery, make sure you always choose qualified surgeon to do the job right.
