When Should You Upgrade Your Lights?

By Tom Sanderrs

In many homes outdated lighting is costing homeowners money and using too much energy. It is for this reason that a periodic check should be made of all lighting and a good place to start is with the fixtures. This should be done regardless if your home is up to building code standards.

Everyone using incandescent lighting is wasting money and therefore it is important to replace all old bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. The main problem with regular light bulbs is that most of the energy they need is turned to heat instead of light and that is also the reason why they have to be off when replaced or they are too hot and will burn the skin.

When you use a CFL bulb you get the same light but with the use of much less wattage than the incandescent bulb. For safety reasons it would be wise to check the light fixture to be sure there are no cracks and if they crackle or it shorts out it would be smart to replace it.

Fluorescent lights have a component inside which is known as a ballast. The function of the ballast in a tube light alters the electrical current activating the gas inside it. The older version one having a magnetic mechanism would buzz or flicker. Aside from that it had noisy parts which also made it less efficient. The new CFL lights do not have this problem since now the electronic ballasts are built in.

Lighting should be upgraded if your home still has incandescent light bulbs or fixtures, as well as old ballast system fluorescent lighting. It is a good idea to have a professional come into your home and assess everything, because they can best tell you what you need to do. Many communities even have energy assistance programs and these will help you to pay for things that need replacing. Before doing anything go and check with the local agencies and obtain all the information you can.

So when should you upgrade your lights? You should replace and upgrade you lights as new technologies are developed. While you may not afford to every time something new comes out, it is always a good idea to keep up on new developments, and see how you can use this to your advantage.

Although it can cost a bit to replace the old bulbs with the new CFL ones you will surely make it up on the savings you will enjoy by replacing the old ones. You don't have to do them all at once but can start out a few at a time.

You can find out more information on when and how to upgrade your lighting through many sources, both online and in your community. If you are not familiar with all these new technologies, you should really educate yourself. Get familiar with the terminology, study up on the different kinds of lights available, CFL's, and even LED lights are available. One thing that is important for your safety, if any of your fixtures are acting like there is something wrong, replace them immediately, or you may have a fire on your hands.
