Choosing A Door - Pitfalls To Avoid
You will want to think very carefully before deciding how to choose your door. It's not an every day task and you won't be able to change it if you make an error. Here are some ideas about choosing a new door or doors.
Although there are certain specific points which apply either to internal or external doors, the main considerations are similar.
Of course, measurements are the first step. Get help with this in order to be completely accurate and use a good quality measuring devise of sufficient length. It's no good fumbling about with a short tape measure single-handed!
Carefully measure the height, width and depth of the door frame, and clearly note down what is what - a rough drawing can be useful. Whilst doing this, look at the condition of the frame and the solidity of its fixing to the walls. This is particularly important in the case of exterior doors. Consider replacing or repairing damaged, worn frames. For an external door, also check the threshold. It may not be just the door itself that you will have to choose.
You can purchase new frames or casings to match your new doors if the existing ones are not up to your standards. There are solid hardwood frames available for your front entrance door and these are an important part of your security. Internally, you can buy new casings if necessary, but be sure to choose the correct size not only for your door but for the depth and type of wall.
Ready-made frames are available or they can be made to order if you have an odd sized opening. Do discuss possibilities with your supplier if you think you need frames.
If there are no doors which exactly fit your dimensions, choose ones which are just a fraction larger.
Having assessed exactly what you have to order (including frames and door furniture), you should see how much it's all likely to cost and then decide on your budget.
When you come to decide on the look of your door, you'll need to think about glazing. A wide range of partially glazed doors is available both for entrance doors and internal doors.
Glazing will alter the whole appearance of your home. It's an immediate source of light which usually improves dark entrances or north facing rooms. It's possible to have obscure or patterned glass which allows light through whilst maintaining a good degree of privacy. Doors should arrive ready glazed with British Safety Standard glass.
Next, think about what your doors will be made from. Different hard and softer woods, uPVC and a variety of new materials are on offer - of course you'll have to see what you can afford, but methods of manufacture mean reasonable prices.
A new front door requires a consideration of your neighbourhood - what sort of front doors do other homes have? You can decide to follow tradition or go outside it.
The doors you fit within your home can also be in the style of the building or something very different which will create a different ambiance.
I hope you enjoy choosing your new doors - the most important tip is to take your time. Once you've done your homework, go to your local showroom or visit a good website. Look at as many examples as possible, ask all the questions you want and discuss your choice. Ask friends if they have advice on how to choose your doors, and finally order only when you're sure of your selection.
