Linux operating system originated at the University of Helsinki, Finland, when a a young student, Linus Torvalds, created it. A small Unix system called Minix fascinated him and he wanted to develop an operating system better than that. His efforts bore fruits and he could come out with version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel in 1994. This Kernel is the base for the development of Linux operating system. And this Kernel has been used by several individuals and companies for developing their own versions of Linux operating systems. The current version in vogue is 2.6 and ongoing efforts are continuing for further development.

It has been amply proved that Linux is the main alternative to Unix and Microsoft operating systems because of its functionality, adaptability and robustness. Several home-based and Office desk tops have shifted to Linux and this number is increasing in leaps and bounds. Linux-embedded microchips are widely used in appliances and devices and this is also on the increase. Under these circumstances, candidates are changing tack and opting for Linux Certification Programs due to the huge career potential available on that platform.

It is the Beginner's course that has to be opted by inexperienced candidates and for those who have enough exposure in Linux, you have an intermediate level course. This intermediate level course is useful for learning Linux system administration also.

Linux Professional Institute Certification offers two levels of Certification, Junior Level Administration called LPIC1 and Intermediate Level Administration called LPIC2. Beginners should opt for LPIC1 and experienced Linux operators can choose LPIC2.

Red Hat has gained phenomenal prominence in the arena of IT certifications because they have devised their own certification for Linux products. RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) Certification, started in 1999, is hailed as the Crown Jewel of Linux Certifications. It is ranked as number one in all the IT certifications even by independent surveys.

RHCT (Red Hat Certified Technician) Program is said to be the fastest growing credential in Linux. It is considered the transition course for non-Linux candidates who want to rework their careers by shifting to Linux platform. Both RHCE and RHCT are highly respected programs because Examinations are conducted on live-test systems and the capabilities of simulating tasks of the System Administrators are challenged by real-life situations.
