Cars - Radio Controlled Recreation

By Stacy Fox
Nov 8, 2009
Radio controlled cars are generally the way people get into the RC hobby.

RC cars started in the mid 1960s by a company called Mardave. Their first cars were gas powered (also called Nitro.) These devices require a transmitter with controls, a throttle to trigger the device and wheels for turning. All of these are placed in the toy's body.

Today, you can select between an electric or fuel model. Electric models have electric speed control. Fuel models have the mechanisms to control the fuel input and other parts of the car.

Radio controlled cars can be toy or hobby grade. Toy grade cars are cheaper and are available in retail stores. They are already assembled and usually use electric power. Hobby grade cars are more expensive but are also more durable and serviceable. You usually have to assemble them yourself. They most often run on gas or nitro. Generally, you have to buy these cars in a hobby shop or specialty online store.

Radio controlled vehicles are sometimes used in races. In addition to cars, there are also rc boats, airplanes, helicopters, and robotics. If a model is small, it is generally intended for indoor play.

Many people who are interested in RC are also interested in robotics. There are annual robotics contests in Japan and other countries.

As you can see, cars only scratch the surface of RC devices. There are dozens, if not hundreds of ways to enjoy the hobby.

As you gain this knowledge, you can start to use advanced techniques to create cars Radio Controlled that are stronger, faster, or more efficient than your previous ones.

If you are just getting into RC, it is generally a good idea to buy pre-made cars to get you started.

Play with it for a couple of days, and then take it apart. Look at the way the motors are connected to the wheels, and look at the general architecture of the RC car.

Once you have developed a basic understanding of the way radio controlled cars work, you can start on a project from scratch. Many people start by building a model car from wood or plastic and install the electrical components. Then they pretty it up by painting it and applying decals.

Starting a new hobby may be daunting at first, since there is a wealth of information that you probably know nothing about.
