Boracay: An Island Paradise
Beautiful Boracay! This seven kilometer-long island is the Philippines' pride when it comes to beaches. Shaped like a bone, this island is about 45 minutes away from Manila (the country's capital) by plane. It is located on the northwest end of Panay island in the Western Visayas.
Boracay offers plenty of diversions depending on your inclination. For water sports enthusiasts, you can go sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kite-surfing and banana-boat riding. For those who just want to lay their hair down and relax, the clear, warm waters and the fine white sand are plenty of inducement to just spend the day at the beach.
So, about its beaches. Boracay has so many. Tourists from the world over truly enjoy what the beaches have to offer. You can go to Diniwid Beach, Balinghai Beach, White Beach and a number of other beaches. Plus, if you really want to get away from the madding crowd, you can hire a motorized boat to bring you to another nearby island.
Other attractions you might want to enjoy would be the bats at Yapak, or the Dead Forest. Both give an eerie (and to some) and exciting feeling when hundreds and even thousands of bats fly over your head and when you see the shadows cast by the dead trees. For exhilarating views of the island from the top, try the climb up Mount Luho which stands some 100 meters above sea level.
If you have the family with you, you can visit Kingfisher's Farm or the Butterfly Garden at Bolabog Beach. The farm actually raises the milkfish (or bangus as it is known to locals). This place allows you to fish for your lunch - but don't worry, if you don't catch anything, you can always order. You can also spend lazy afternoons combing the beach for shells.
Come nighttime, Boracay moves to a different beat - more rhythmic, more lively. The partying mood continues till the wee hours of the day. Feel free to join in the revelry. Everybody's welcome!
