Keyword Density: The Most Crucial Part of Keyword Marketing
To optimize the content of your website, you should find the most effective keywords for your site. However, this is only the first step. The next hurdle to overcome is keyword density. This means that you have to incorporate these keywords into your content whether these are articles, website copy, or blogs. This will directly affect your keyword marketing.
You need to find the right balance between using the keywords enough for the search engines to notice and avoid overdoing it or else the search engines will avoid you.
How search engines use keywords
During the early years when the search engines first appeared in the late 1990's, web sites only need to repeat key words several times so that the search engines will find them. The search engines funneled all the traffic to the highest keyword density without caring about how they were used.
Today, the search engines are much more intelligent. These search engines, like Google, have developed a different way to evaluate web sites and this means detecting excessive repeated use of keywords. This is called "keyword stuffing." A website found to practice keyword stuffing is often penalized or worst, left out of the directory of the search engine.
Why Keyword Use is Crucial
Having the right keyword density on your website means knowing when and how to use the search terms you have selected to target. Besides limiting the number of times a keyword appears, be sure to also pay attention to the way it blends into the copy.
There is nothing worse than a repeated phrase that sticks out like a sore thumb to every site visitor. They know exactly what you are doing and it distracts them from taking in the information, which is the real purpose for their visit. Everything has to feel natural and make sense, including the keywords, and their usage within the text.
Achieving the perfect keyword density.
So how do you know if you're using the right keyword density? When do you know if you're repeating the keyword too much?
Along with their widely known AdWords program, Google has a tool that evaluates your website for the frequency of repetition, called Google Rankings. You can also calculate it on your own by comparing the total number of words on a page with the times a certain keyword appears. Again, finding the balance is likely to lead to more traffic, and a steady, consistent increase in your search engine ranking.
