Replacing A Broken Electrical Switch

By Scott Rodgers
Nov 8, 2009
A broken or burned out electrical switch asks for an immediate replacement and long avoiding the assignment may hamper the functioning of some of the affiliated appliances and electrical devices of your home.

Instead of availing the services of an electrician, you can yourself undertake this minor electrical project. With the assistance from the typical electrical tools such as pliers, cutters, screwdrivers and insulating tape the whole project would be restricted to an hour task.

Kick off the campaign by switching off the main electricity supply from the breaker box or the fuse box. Test the outlets of the room to which the electricity has been cut short with the help of a voltage tester or a digital multimeter.

Insert the metal probes of the tester into the outlet's plug and check the neon bulb. A glowing neon bulb indicates the presence of electricity whereas no illumination points to the absence of electricity in the outlet. A switch can simply be turned on and off to check whether it is receiving current or not.

Once you know that the electricity is cut off to the concerned switch, start removing the cover plate of the switch. Use an appropriate screwdriver to undo the cover plate. Now locate the two screws that are holding the switch setup to the wall. Unscrew them and pull out the switch a few inches from the wall such that the underlying wiring is exposed.

Pick up a color pen or tape to note down the wiring configuration on the switch board determining the color of the wires that're connected to the respective terminals of the switch. These indications would assist you a lot while connecting wires to the new switch.

Buy a new switch in accordance with the old one and invite any possible suggestion from the salesperson of the hardware store. Based on your need and the electrical framework, he may suggest a switch type that may suit your framework better.

Install the new switch taking into account the tags that you drew while removing the old switch. After the task is finished, switch on the main electricity to check the switch for its normal operation.
