Find Out Why WE Keep Our Country's Flags Hoisted
For most of usflags, banners or pennants, as they area sometimes called, are more commonly seen in the armed forces. Even families have been passed down a custom flag made to represent their family name. Flag stores will make up any unusual design that is imaginable and it is quite a unique idea. These pennants can be made up with different symbols placedonto the back cloth to attain the desired finish that is required.
It is common to see that pennants are flown on ships or vessels. Indeed, you will often see those very large tankers flying pennants from many different countries. These ships, although they may be from virtually any country in the world, may actually be registered, for tax or licensing purposes, in another country.
Government departments usually need their own pennants flying outside office buildings or complexes and the top brass' will have smaller versions on their office desks. Some diplomats will give a table top pennant as a complimentary gift when welcoming visitors from foreign countries and it is considered to be a necessary and obligatory compliment to receive one.
The usual idea behind having distinctive pennants was for identification purposes particularly in places where it was necessary to identify different factions. Beach safe areas, for example, are prime places where flying a pennant could save lives. In past centuries if a soldier was lost in dense jungle or under fire, how else would he be able to find his unit? These pennants, in colors representing their unit, were flown from a rod or staff, or set atop a hill or tall building, so that wounded or disoriented soldiers could see where to rally. If a foe's pennant was captured it was thought by the captors that those serving under that banner had given up or surrendered. It was then that these banners or pennants became synonymous with corps pride. They would be safeguarded, perhaps unfortunately, to the death sometimes.
At sea, when there were no powered forms of contact that we have today, pennants were used as a form of crude but effective way to signal and send messages to other vessels. This was more economical than chasing passing ships and sometimes, evennowadays; they are used when there is no other optionor electronic signaling is not available. When ships are in dock, there will be linesof pennants decorating the ship. Each individual pennant denotes a wordand they actually spell out a message.
Over the centuries these banners haveevolved into national banners or pennants. Colors are symbolizing the country of origin. Indeed most African pennants will normally always haveblack, green, yellow and red. These colorways will always representsomething in Africa and Rastafarian adopted red, yellow and green as their own.
Learning institutions have adopted the pennants particularly for their teams to carry to matches. These are more often than not made in school colors and they are carried with pride. Who would have thought that something as mundane as a piece of silk could be with us for centuries and become so important that even schoolchildren and princes swear their allegiance to them?
