What To Hunt For While Getting A High Definition Television

So, you are in the hunt for the spanking new High Definition television?

Let's talk about what an HDTV is, before we get started.

Essentially an high definition television set is the latest in TV technology which offers much higher image clarity than the older TVs. For higher resolutions your TV needs to be connected to an HD signal.

Try to be very careful in selecting the TV based on your expectations. When some people watch television, they want quality. Others just want television.

When you visit your dealer, ask them to show you the real quality of the HDTV by tuning to a high definition signal. Truly evaluating the difference high definition between the TVs is to compare all the models next to each other using the same "feed". It is the only way to appreciate the difference too.

What does it mean talking about resolution?

Well, the HDTVs currently come in a variety of flavors from 720 to 1080 - there are lower resolutions but you really shouldn't consider anything less than 720 and really no less than 1080 if you want great quality picture. The resolutions come in a "i" and a "p" variety, the same goes for 720 resolutions - in other words, you have 1080i and 1080p.

1080i is the highest resolution you can get if you are only watching regular HD TV broadcasts. Technically speaking from a resolution standpoint, the best TV you can purchase today will have a 1080p rating.

As the regular broadcast TV would use 1080i only, there is no need to get the 1080p, however if you intend to buy a blue ray disc player or play the latest games on the xbox player then you should buy a 1080p.

While there are other areas that can make a difference in terms of your image quality such as: contrast ration, screen , brightness and other control features; the resolution is key to image quality as the difference between a regular non-HDTV and a 1080 resolution TV is a factor of six. In simpler terms, compared to a normal television set, a 1080p HDTV is six times clearer in its image clarity.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of things you should know about before investing your hard earned money on a new HD TV set. Be sure you learn about all of the different brands. You can select from 2nd and 3rd tier brands, as well as Sony and Samsung, who are the top choices. And while the specs look similar there can be a wide disparity between each television set. So be vigilant!
