Family holidays are so exciting. From the planning stage to actually experiencing the holiday as a family. Plan ahead as driving holidays in a rental car can become disasterous if you have not planned for the unexpected.
If you wish to have a good experience on a long family drive, then make sure you have covered the food aspect. Kids love food. Especially small packets that they can have individually. Having small packets of food will help you pass them out and will also cut down on waste. There will be no need to stop and eat, as the children can enjoy their little snacks in the hire car. Be prepared for mess though and a cheap packet of baby wipes will assist with sticky fingers or little spills. It is important to drink plenty of fluid on a long drive, in particular water.
If you are flying to a destination and then driving in a hire car, make sure to research the area that you plan on driving through. This will give you an opportunity to make a quick stop over at a supermarket to stock up on snacks. It will also be a good time for the driver to get use to the rental car.
To delay the kids asking "Are we there yet?" you can organise to bring games to occupy the kids, or books to read. You may also have a few fun driving games that your family can enjoy. Children will generally stay involved in games for longer when mum and dad join in. There is nothing more annoying then if you arrive to collect your vehicle and you have to squash everyone in. The best tip is to drive during the kids nap time. This will give you at least a few minutes of silence as your precious little ones have a nap. If you find that the children are restless and over tired then simply stop for a 5 minute break and let them stretch their legs and enjoy some fresh air.
