Things To Ponder When Buying A Baby Monitor

Aug 18, 2007
There are many styles (black & white, color, video) of baby monitors available for purchase at baby products stores or online. When you're in the market to buy a baby monitor, you should take in consideration one that fits your lifestyle and your home in which it will be used. Here are some suggestions which will help you find the perfect baby monitor so that you can keep a closer eye on your baby for their safety and your peace of mind.

Baby monitors have different ranges. The range you need depends upon your house and your lifestyle. If you are monitoring your baby from a few rooms away, or in a smaller home, almost any baby monitors on the market today will do. If your home is large or even a multi-story home, or you'd like to be able to take the receiver outside to sit on the porch or go to the garage, there are baby monitors with longer ranges. By getting one with a long range, you can be sure you'll hear your baby from far away. This gives you more freedom.

Have you ever experienced interference on your cordless phone at home? Well, it can happen with a baby monitor. For example: If your neighbors are close and have children, a thing to remember is that other families may have baby monitors also and are using the same channel you are using. This means you may hear what happens in other homes, and they may hear you. Cordless phones may also pick up baby monitor sounds. That means you could be hearing your neighbor's baby instead of your. If interference is a concern for you, look for a baby monitor with multiple channels so you find a channel not being used by your neighbors.

The very basic baby monitors let you hear what's happening in baby's room. For many parents, this is all they need. However, modern baby monitors also let you watch your baby on video. There are baby monitors that even monitor baby's breathing and movement. Video monitors are great. Since you won't want to monitor the screen constantly, it is important that your monitor also has good sound.

There are baby monitors which have movement sensors to give you peace of mind. A word of caution, the AAP warns that parents may gain a false sense of security from movement monitors. Make sure you check your baby personally; it is still the safest option. The same goes for the baby monitors who have just sound or even the video.

Multi-Room Monitoring really offers freedom to the parents of newborn babies. Most baby monitors have one transmitter for the nursery and the basic models with have one or two receivers that let parents listen to baby. If you need or want transmitters in more than one room, or you have more than one child to monitor, there are fewer choices. Some parents will buy two or more baby monitor systems to meet their unique monitoring situation for different children. You have to be careful with this option so your systems don't interfere, or you'll only hear irritating electronic noise.

The more tech savvy parents may decide to use a web cam to monitor their baby. This is pretty cool but you would need a laptop for portability. Some parents use the webcam to monitor their baby when they are away from home and the baby is left with a sitter. The cost of webcams are considerably less than dedicated baby monitors. As stated they require internet connection and computers to make it work. It definitely has some possibilities.

Is your baby monitor portability a concern? The majority of baby monitor receivers today have at least a belt clip that allows parents to carry the receiver with them around the house. Make sure the monitor your are interested in is sturdy enough to allow you to move the receiver around a lot. Look at the belt clip and check the belt clip and the attachment method to be sure it's sturdy enough to withstand daily use.

Check the power source and battery life. Does it also come with an a/c adapter so that you can use it instead of the battery. The battery will be used in case the house looses power. Will you need to plug it in constantly? Some new baby monitors have small receivers on a lanyard that can be worn around your neck. I am not sure I would like that but for some parents, this is ideal.

To sum up, there are baby monitors on the market that will fit every need and budget. Decide how your plan to use the baby monitor and then go shopping.
