Iomega Hard Drives Are Almost Indestructible

By Matthew Kerridge

Most any user of computers who has an appreciation for them understands that there is always going to come a time when additional data storage capacity is going to be needed. That's when Iomega hard drives are appreciated for their quality and durability before many other hard drives out on the market. The company makes a lineup that is impressive in both external and portable versions.

For those unfamiliar with what a hard drive actually is, they should know that these non-volatile drives digitally encode the data they receive on to what are called platters. These platters spin very rapidly and are also magnetized. The word "drive" doesn't refer to anything to do with the means by which the data is encoded, though. It actually refers to the mechanical nature of the unit.

All hard drives share a common technical name, which is "hard disk drive." These drives are distinguished by the fact that they are sealed completely except for one or two small holes that act as vents in order to help the drive equalize pressure within it. The well-known computer maker IBM developed the first hard drive back in'56.

Iomega specializes in the manufacture of portable and external hard drive models that are suffused with an extreme amount of technology and engineering development that helps give them a reputation in the industry for great quality, extreme durability and serious reliability. As these drives have become more common, they've come down in price quite a bit.

There are a great many drives made by Iomega that are really serious in terms of how much data they can store, with many capable of holding over 500 GB. This is a quite large amount of storage for an external or portable drive to be able to handle. They also are extremely svelte, weighing in at less than 4 pounds.

The lineup of portable hard drives made by Iomega feature a multitude of ways in which they can connect to just about any computer. The company has packed all of them with a number of wireless technologies, including the very popular FireWire, along with standard USB 2. 0 connectivity. This makes these drives a particular favorite of serious users.

Almost everybody who has ever tried out Iomega hard drives has come away from the tryout extremely impressed. Since it first came into existence, Iomega has put in a great deal of time and effort to turn out a lineup of portable and external hard drives that would probably win almost any head-to-head matchup against most other external and portable hard drives made.
