Gifts Etiquette: Minding Your Manners With Gifts

Aug 18, 2007
In general gifts are given to promote goodwill and good relationships. Gifts are given to show appreciation. Gift etiquette applies a lot in consideration of the person you are giving. You have to give gift that you know the recipient will appreciate. Do some research and find out what their interest and hobbies are. They sure will be impressed that you took time to discover what they feel comfortable and what they like. It was not just a wild guess that the recipient will like this.

Lingerie should be given when you have a close personal relationship, it is an intimate gift and it is not appropriate for a business gift or wedding gift. Giving the right gift also calls for the right occasion. Like wedding gifts, the wedding gift etiquette is important. When two people get married they start a new life together and gift etiquette can play an important role in giving gifts. The wedding gifts do not have to be very expensive; the thought is really what counts whether it will be cash, check or a gift item.

Gift etiquette does not specify how much to spend, but one needs to be sensible and keep it in you mind that it is a special day and the gifts received are a way to cherish and remember that special day.

Whether you give or receive a gift, properly thanking people is also very important. When it comes to birthdays and general occasions sending out thank you cards will be necessary only if you have not thanked someone in person. But in special occasions like weddings and anniversaries sending out thank you cards is the proper way to thank someone for their gift.

With wedding gifts how much to spend seems to be a question of etiquette. Do not try to spend on how much your meal will cost. This is not true on gift etiquette, stay on your budget and be financially responsible in choosing a gift. The giving of gifts is not a competition on who gets to give the most expensive gift. How much you spend is really a personal decision and you should not be guided on what others might give. Shop for a gift according to what the recipient will like, not according to the price. And if you are given a gift do not ask how it was because it might offend the person who gave it to you.

There is no special formula for determining the appropriate amount in spending on a gift. It is a misconception to determine the price of your gift as to one plate during the reception on weddings, birthdays, baby shower or ant general occasion.

Gift etiquette in business also counts for the higher the position the more expensive the gift should be. Remembering the gift giving etiquette will display proper your sincerity without upsetting anyone. Remember it all depends on the person. Gifts should be for a specific person based on what you know about them. Gift etiquette is an art, master it.
