What Exactly Is Wicker Furniture And What Is It Not?

Aug 23, 2007
Wicker furniture encompasses all kinds of furniture that is woven using natural organic material including rattan, willow, bamboo and reed. Wicker furniture, a beautiful addition to any room requires proper maintenance in order to preserve its good looks.

The important thing to keep in mind is that wicker furniture does best in an environment that has a certain degree of humidity. Dry environments can make wicker brittle and prone to breakage. Wicker furniture should especially not be kept near any source of dry heat as this will only help the furniture deteriorate faster. Take heed of the manufacturer's instructions on how best to restore the furniture's moisture content.

Regardless of which material your furniture has been constructed from, cleaning it can be quite challenging because of its textured surface. Dirt and dust that gets trapped in between the weaves can be quite difficult to remove. The best way to remove dust from wicker furniture is by regularly dusting with a feather duster or a soft brush. You could also use the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner.

If there is a heavy build up of dust, wipe the furniture with a soft, damp cloth that has been dampened in a mild soapy solution. Remove any soap residue by wiping with a cloth that has been dampened in plain water. Use minimum water to prevent the wicker from getting soggy and water logged, as excess water can stretch wicker and render it out of shape.

Wicker furniture that is left outdoors is more prone to have stubborn dirt and dust build up. Outdoor furniture is best cleaned by spraying water using a garden hose. Position the furniture in such a way that the water runs easily off the furniture so that the furniture does not get water-logged. Make sure the tighter weave is higher than the lower weave. Quickly wipe away excess water after you've finished hosing down your wicker furniture and leave it to dry.

Take special care not to disrupt the pattern or weave spacing of the furniture while washing it as wicker will tend to dry in the new pattern and not its original design. If strands are pulled too far apart in the cleaning process, it will dry in that position, which eventually pulls the furniture askew when it dries. Do not use your wicker furniture or place any heavy objects on it until it is completely dry. Wet wicker tends to adapt to any external force and will take the shape of the object, spoiling its original good looks.
