7 Must Have Golf Career Profiles

Aug 25, 2007
If you are looking for a golf career, but are afraid of being lost in the low-paying, low-prestige end of the industry, pay close attention to this: While it is true that there are an abundance of such jobs, there are also many more prestigious golf jobs for talented, devoted golf enthusiasts.

Many people believe that in order to pursue a golf career, they will have to be content with low-end industry jobs. Before you worry that you will spend your entire career as a golf shop cashier or in food service at the golf club, however, consider these seven exciting careers.

7: Trick Shot Artist. Imagine a golf career in which you get paid to goof around. Trick shot artists make their living with a combination of golf skills and a knack for entertainment. In this career, you would spend your time choreographing and practicing astonishing or entertaining stunts, and then get paid to show off your bag of tricks in front of an audience. There's no better way to have work feel like play!

6: Golf Journalist or Photographer. With a career in golf journalism or photography, you could get paid to attend golf events. Golf journalists and photographers cover tournaments and other events, and their articles can be syndicated nationwide, depending on the popularity of the event. People who can write intelligently and expertly on golf are in demand, as well as those who know what photographs are important to get and how to get them. If you really know your golf, but you also enjoy writing or photography, try doing both with this fabulous golf career.

5: Golf Broadcaster or Commentator. Like with golf journalists and photographers, those who enter this golf career are required to know the game like the back of their hand. Many people who watch golf do not fully understand the game, so they rely on broadcasters and commentators to tell them what is going on, in addition to making any pertinent comments about the game. Golf broadcasters and commentators also need to have excellent speaking voices and plenty of charisma. These qualities are also found in those who pursue high-visibility careers such as news casting and entertaining.

4: Tournament and Event Planner. You will be able to tell people that you put together popular golf tournaments. Event planners are important in the golf industry. Think of all the major and minor tournaments in the golf industry, as well as innumerable other events, and you will see that this golf career offers job security as well as bragging rights.

3: Caddie. Believe it or not, caddies are a big deal in the realm of professional golf. A caddie is a pro golfer's right-hand man, knowledgeable about the game and able to anticipate and even recommend a player's next move. Because the role of a caddie is so important, it provides the opportunity for an astonishingly successful golf career. Good caddies are highly sought after, and the best may even be asked to caddie for top golfers during major tournaments.

2: Golf Player Manager. A golf player's manager is an important person. The manager provides a buffer between the player and the rest of the world, protecting the player from bad business deals and rabid fans alike. A manager needs to have a knack for knowing what makes money (and what doesn't), as well as strong negotiating skills. Some managers also handle the PR aspect of pro golf; those who do will need to have a strong connection with the media, and a sense for how to encourage good publicity. However, there is little that is more rewarding than managing a successful pro golfer.

1: Professional Golfer. It probably won't surprise you that the number one prestigious golf career is being a professional golfer. Pro golfers get a lot of attention in our society: They are interviewed on TV and radio, profiled in magazines, covered in newspapers, and photographed constantly. Television stations broadcast their games, sports experts write opinion columns on their careers' promise, and debate the quality of their performance. Professional golf is above and beyond the most visible career in the industry, and as such is typically the most sought after as well.

If you are looking for a golf career, don't think that you have to choose between being a pro golfer and working on the golf course maintenance crew. There are many desirable careers in the golf industry. Next time someone tells you you'll never make it as a golfer, be prepared to rattle off all of the prestigious careers in the industry, starting with these seven.
