Where to Find a Free Deck Plan

Aug 29, 2007
Deck plans are the result of a design process in which all the various parts combine in a structure that is aesthetically appealing and also sturdy in nature. People often search for sources of a free deck plan that can be copied or modified to suit their needs. The simplest and most economical plans are often those with squared-off sides. Deck plans with curves are available but usually require more complex support frameworks and advanced carpentry skills in their construction. Free deck plans are also easy to obtain for multilevel decks connected by steps, stairs or ramps but they tend to require more work and expense than single level decks.

Individuals searching for a free deck plan make the mistake of not attempting to create their own unique one which would more likely suit their personal needs.

The process is simple. Take a tape measure out into the backyard, measure the distances from the house to the property lines, the locations of windows and doors, electrical outlets, dryer vents and water sources. Record these on a sheet of paper including other items such as trees, gardens, water features, sheds, etc.

Simply do a little bit of deck design work by lightly sketching in the possible shape, size and location of the deck in relation to the house and other backyard items. Eventually, when you have a design that has possibilities, confer with other members of the family for their input. Make any changes as a result of this conference.

Eventually transfer your idea to graph paper. Draw it to scale with one square on the graph paper representing a number of inches or feet. An example would be one square equals one foot. In planning a larger deck tape 2 or more sheets of graph paper together.

In creating a deck plan eliminate unnecessary waste, on-site cutting and extra expense by designing your deck with lumber in readily available standard lengths of 8, 10, 12 and 16 feet.

Building codes can vary from region to region so it is wise to visit your local building department to obtain information related to the design and construction of a deck. It's absolutely free so take advantage of it. This will help you avoid creating a deck design that will not be approved for some reason.

Make any changes needed as a result of your visit to the local building department.

Voila! You've just created your own free deck plan.

In the end the choice of a deck design will be made by selecting one of 2 sources - a free deck plan that ultimately will require some form of alteration or adaptation in order to meet the needs and desires of its new owner or an original deck plan drawn up by the homeowner that will suit the specific needs and aesthetic tastes of that family.
