Sunny Sexy Italian Sorrento

Aug 29, 2007
Sorrento is a small city in Campania, Italy, with some 16,500 inhabitants. This small town is wonderfully located over white steep cliffs and offers a fantastic view over the Bay of Naples.

Sorrento lies on a Tufa terrace and is enclosed by impressive rocks of the limestone mountains. For 2000 years already visitors from all over the world have been attracted to Sorrento by breathtaking sunsets and fragrances of orange and lemon gardens.

It is a popular tourist destination. The town can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii, as it lies at the south eastern end of the Circumvesuviana rail line.

The town overlooks the bay of Naples, as the key place of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and many viewpoints in the city allow sight of Naples itself visible across the bay and Vesuvius. The Amalfi Drive connecting Sorrento and Amalfi is the narrow road that threads around the high cliffs above the Mediterranean.

Ferry boats and hydrofoils provide services to Naples, Amalfi, Positano, Capri and Ischia. Sorrento's sea cliffs are impressive and its luxury hotels have attracted famous personalities including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti.

Sorrento is famous for the production of Limoncello, an alcoholic digestif made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water and sugar. Other agricultural production includes citrus fruit, wine, nuts and olives. Wood craftsmanship is also developed.

Set on a spectacular headland, Sorrento boasts wonderful views across the Bay of Naples to Capri and Ischia. The old town is full of character with a wealth of restaurants and bars and the main street is lined with elegant boutiques.

Life centres around the Piazza Tasso and at dusk you can watch the town come alive from one of the many pavement cafes. Good value, high quality restaurants abound and although Naples, home of the pizza, is only 55 kilometres away, the Sorrento area is most famed for its spaghetti dishes.

Shopping in Sorrento is one of the most fun and amusing activities to do in town, there is a wide variety of shops and goods to choose from. The centre of shopping in Sorrento is Via S Cesareo, in the heart of town.

There are a multitude of shops lining the ancient Greek Roman route where tourists from every part of the world browse for some locally crafted items.
Here you can buy handcrafted items, including inlaid works artistic ceramics and scented wax; limoncello sweets rosolio liqueur silver jewels corals and Neapolitan eighteenth century cribs figurines.

The good location of Sorrento unfortunately also led to heavy traffic load in the narrow streets of the town. Relaxation and silence can presently still be found in the gardens and private beaches of the hotels, the orange grove of the museum or the monastery garden.

Sorrento is recommendable as a tourist destination or a starting point for sightseeing of every kind, however it is less recommendable for a pure swimming or recuperation holiday.
