Personal Saunas Need Only Minimal Space

Sep 2, 2007
Your on vacation and enjoying the sauna at the spa or sitting in the sauna at your local health club and you think, does my home have room for a sauna? The answer lies in educating yourself about the designs personal saunas and how surprisingly small yet versatile personal saunas can be. Manufacturers have responded to the growing demand for home saunas by offering one and two person saunas that can be assembled with a minimum of effort and that require only existing household electrical service to operate. Available space in a basement or elsewhere in the home can now be turned into a space for relaxing in the warm, relaxing confines of your own personal home sauna.

The typical personal sauna comes in the form of a kit. The kit will normally contain the three sides, top, the floor and the entry door. A reliable manufacturer will ensure that the kit has a complete set of assembly instructions and specifications. Most kits have been designed to lock snugly together and the assembly process will require only a minimum number of basic hand tools. Since the assembly process can be relatively simple the most difficult decision may be finding an appropriate or convenient location inside your home. Some kits may come in two pieces and manufacturers are keen to the size limitations of residential doorways and have designed the pieces to easily move into your home. There is no plumbing required for a personal sauna but you will need to consider how much space you need and whether the required electrical service is available.

Some things to consider are whether the location you choose has the required electrical plug in service. If the location is appropriate but the electrical is not available, an additional electrical circuit may need to be installed. If you determine that a new electrical circuit is needed, you need to decide if the task is something you can handle or if it requires the services of a qualified electrician. Sometimes the decision is made for you by virtue of local building codes that mandate that any electrical work in your home be completed by a licensed electrician. If local codes are not an issue and you are absolutely certain of your ability to do the work yourself, then adding the required electrical circuit may be a rewarding project. Many personal saunas require a 220 volt electrical service and you should always consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about whether the existing main electrical panel in your home can accept the addition of 220 volt service.

An obvious consideration is the overall size of the sauna you are planning to purchase. The overall size of a small, two person sauna is approximately four feet by 5 while a one person model may average only 4 feet by 4 feet. The average height is approximately 6.5 feet which is low enough relative to the height of the average residential ceiling. Personal indoor saunas have all the heating elements and controls integrated into the unit so there is seldom a need to allow extra space for other equipment. If space is problem inside your home, you might consider purchasing an outdoor model.

Many manufacturers offer a variety of optional features that can enhance your sauna experience. Examples of some available options include digital heating controls, glass front doors, custom bench seating designs, and different lighting options. Most suppliers offer array of accessory items that can make your personal sauna truly unique. Traditional wooden copper water ladles, fragrances, replacement sauna rocks, hygrometers and other amenities that will make the sauna your own.
