Gold Jewelry: Learning To Care For It

Oct 9, 2007
Gold jewelry is stylish and sophisticated that could match almost all types of outfits whether you are dressed down or donned in a formal gown. It doesn't really matter if you bought the gold jewelry yourself or you have received it as a gift, if you care for it accordingly it can last longer than a lifetime. You could even hand it down to your children and further generations. There are steps that you could undertake to preserve your gold jewelry's beauty.

Gold jewelry is durable but when treated in a rough manner, it can get dents or scratches. This would particularly apply to bracelets and rings so it is advised that they are removed before engaging in any strenuous activities that might knock them.

Your gold jewelry should be kept away from chemicals. Chlorine would be the worst enemy of gold as repeated exposure to chlorine can weaken its structure that could lead to breakage in the long run. To make your gold jewelry last longer, keep it away from cleaning products that contain chlorine and avoid wearing them when taking a dip in the pool or Jacuzzi. Also, some common household cleaning solutions that have harmful chemicals like acids and abrasives for instance can damage the finish of gold jewelry. So, if you have plans to do some cleaning, wear protective gloves over your hand jewelries or better yet remove and store them safely.

Repeated exposure to moisture, dust, perspiration and make up can make gold lose its luster over time. Jewelry must be cleaned regularly and you can make your own cleaning solution of lukewarm water or sudsy. After cleaning and rinsing your jewelry, wipe it dry with a soft cloth to prevent scratches and to really bring out its shine. You could as well send it to your local jeweler for some professional steam cleaning.

While the cleaning of gold jewelry is important, storing it properly is equally important too. Your gold jewelry will be protected if you store it safely and securely in a jewelry box or you wrap it in a soft cloth when not in use. It is best to have the pieces stored separately to avoid entanglement or scratches. A jewelry box with compartments should do the trick.

Regularly check your jewelry for any damage or signs of weakness. Pay close attention to clasps to ensure that they are still secure. Check also if the prongs are not bent, cracked or loose as well as the links on chains and pendants. If so, bring your jewelry to a trusted professional jeweler for repair. Your jeweler will be able to handle repairs and restore your jewelry back for you.
