A Memorable Wedding Speech From The Best Man

Oct 9, 2007
You have been chosen as the best man in your best friend's wedding, and now you have to write a wedding speech. So where do you start?

There are a number of factors that you should take into consideration. Most importantly, keep it short and simple. Long speeches are undesirable at weddings. Keep in mind that the guests may have been sitting for quite some time; they are most likely tired, hungry, or even possibly intoxicated, so your speech should be no longer than three to five minutes.

Always remember the couple when writing your best man wedding speech. Try to remember that your friend is now a husband, with a new bride to please, and keep your speech with highlights from the relationship that you have with the both of them. Make your speech personal.

Weddings are solemn and special occasions. Humor helps to loosen everyone up at the reception. While a little humor has its place in a great best man speech, try to be as relevant as possible, and do not make any off color jokes. Embarrassing the groom with silly stories from the past can really dampen the mood at a wedding. A funny joke or humorous anecdote without being mean spirited will get the party started.

Your wedding speech should also reflect the sincere feeling of well wishes for the new bride and groom. Always remember to wish your friend a long and happy marriage in your speech. Sincerity is something that really touches people on an emotional level. Finish up with some sentimentality. You have laid the brickwork with your funny stories, now have everyone in the palm of your hand with a heartfelt finish. Relate what an honor it is and how much the bride and groom mean to each other. Tell everyone what a great friend the groom is to you and what a special day this is. Think of a story that really illustrates the groom's character or an illustration that tells about him as a person. Personal stories help to add credibility and sincerity while capturing the attention of your audience.

Finally, implore everyone to raise their glass for a toast to the bride and groom.

The key to delivering a great memorable best man wedding speech is to stay relaxed, well prepared, and confident. Above all, be sober! Try to talk as naturally as possible. Make notes if you have to, but never read your speech. Vary your eye contact between the bride and groom, and the audience; and most importantly keep it up-beat.
