The Relationship between Asbestos and Mesothelioma

Oct 10, 2007
Mesothelioma lawyers and attorneys in Texas are concerned about the health and well-being of Texans and have informally joined to together to help citizens understand that, in certain circumstances, they may have an illness that is a result of employer negligence. This disease is mesothelioma and it has killed over 126 Texans - ranking Texas as 7th in the nation for deaths due to mesothelioma.

It is a little known fact that every year in the USA they are an estimated 2,500 to 4,000 people, who are diagnosed with the asbestos-related disease-mesothelioma. It has been projected there will have been over 60,000 mesothelioma deaths by the year 2030. The statistics go even further to forecast that there will be approximately another 250,000 deaths caused by other strains of cancer known to be related to asbestos.

Even though, mesothelioma is a somewhat rare disease and the occurrence of it has been going down since the early 1990s, if you or someone you know has mesothelioma, it doesn't matter if it is rare because its symptoms are affecting you and they are serious and often fatal.

Another tightly controlled secret about mesothelioma is that business owners and/or managers knew almost 90 years ago that asbestos was a health risk. Not only did they know, they did nothing about it. Often corporations continued to use asbestos and related products despite the fact that good alternative products existed. Employees were not informed they were working with a dangerous material. The allegations are that corporations did this for the profit it afforded them.

Because the source of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos and related products and because it is 100% preventable by avoiding this exposure, there is a chance that you may be eligible for a financial settlement. Contacting a mesothelioma attorney or lawyer is a smart step to take to find out if your case is related to employer negligence. If the mesothlioma lawyer you contact feels that it is, he will help you file a lawsuit to seek a financial settlement.

Taking this train of thought a bit further, corporations have been determined legally culpable because they chose not to inform their employees of the health risks and continued to use asbestos and related products. With this bit of history discussed this brings us up where we are today - people are acquiring mesothelioma and/or being diagnosed with it and dying from it all because of the "bottom line" - profit.

If you have worked in a profession known to be associated with asbestos such as: pipe coverers, laborers, navy yard workers, brake mechanics, auto mehanics, millwrights, painters, plasterers, Merchant Marine seaman, bricklayers, boilermakers, auto mechanics, machinists, lathers, insulators, welders, sheetmetal workers, crane operators, aircraft mechanics, engineers, masonry workers, longshoremen, plant workers, powerhouse workers, railroad workers, inspectors, maintenance workers, paper mill workers, tapers, cement finishers, foundry workers, carpenters, roofers, and sailors, it I a good idea to talk with your physician to determine if you may already be showing early signs of the disease.

Because mesothelioma has a long latency period, where someone has the disease but has not yet been showing any symptoms or affected by symptoms, it is exceeding uncommon to have it diagnosed earlier than 55 to 60 years of age. In fact, data indicates that the most common age for the disease to be diagnosed is 65 years. This is compatible with the information revealing that 75% of the diagnoses of mesothelioma occur in persons over 60 years of age. The long latency period form exposure to symptoms can range anywhere for 15 to 50 years. Most often mesothelioma has progressed to a very late stage and the individual is found to be in a terminal stage when symptoms become evident and they receive the diagnosed as cancer.

The tumors growing inside the body, as a result of the asbestos exposure, are consistent with the type of cells affected by the disease. It is tragic there is such a long "incubation period" and people are not conscious they need to be concerned until a significant level of cancer cell growth has occurred. As mentioned earlier, when disease is diagnosed the life-span is around a year to 18 months.

If you or someone you know has worked in one of thee professions listed, see a physician. If a diagnosis of mesothelioma is made, contact a mesothelioma attorney or lawyer because they will ensure appropriate legal support begins.
