How to Choose MCSE Training

Oct 11, 2007
Aiming at a managerial level, suitable MCSE training should allow you to assess the IT requirements of a company, and then begin to design and implement the appropriate infrastructure. Unsurprisingly, there is a huge demand for this skill-set, with Microsoft systems and software destined to stay in ahead of rivals well into the future.

There are a huge range of Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) qualifications, as well as MS Office accreditation. Since MCSE training is aimed at future managers, you will already need to be good all rounder, and training providers recommend you start from at least a years experience of fixing day-to-day software, hardware or network problems, or have previously completed the desktop support training (MCDST). All Microsoft training can be undertaken directly through Microsoft, either online, as a distance learning package, or through a specialist training provider, who will offer services catered to your individual needs.

If you opt for the Windows Server 2003 track MCSE training, there are six core modules: four networking system exams, one client operating system exam, and one systems design exam. You then have a choice of modules, where you will need to draw on your experience administering systems or desktop operating systems, and can opt to be examined in anything from designing and implementing databases, systems management, and -
internet security to project management solutions. If you are upgrading from a previous qualification, you will need to take two exams to receive the Windows Server 2003 Credentials.

The MCSE 2000 qualification differs slightly in that it requires you to pass four operating system training course exams, one design exam and two electives. Other options you may want to look at are specialisms in Messaging and Security on MS Windows Server 2003, and assisted pathways to getting the grips with the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system.

Training can be undertaken in a live classroom or online environment, which offers benefits in terms of time and pace. Normally online training has a limit on the completion date, but there can be offers of free upgrades within this period. Microsoft also publishes a number of books that support their accreditation.

If your experience is insufficient for the MCSE course, for the desktop support course only two Microsoft Certified modules are required, whereas for the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator qualification (MCSA) four are needed. Other Microsoft Certified training schemes include Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) and Microsoft Certified Database Administrators (MCDA). According to your training route, you may come out with multiple MS accreditations.

So what's in it for you? A key incentive might well be that MCSE certified professionals can earn between 33-38 thousand pounds per annum. All the MCP qualifications offer industry-wide recognition of your expertise and abilities. Microsoft also supports its training with an exclusive MCP member website, discounts on products and services, and invitations to conferences, events and training sessions, so you can benefit from some of the prestige associated with this company.

Training providers may offer a variety of ways of paying, including prices for individual modules, and you could benefit from a free trial of their online training. It's a good idea to shop around for the deal that is best for you.
