In the Comfort and Safety of your Own Home Learn How to Cope With Anxiety

Oct 11, 2007
Let's face it. We all get nervous at some point in our lives, but when it begins to take over our lives and affect daily activities, sleep and our overall health, it is time to take some action.

When we do feel anxious, however, there is no need to head out to the most expensive spa in town, or take pill after pill to calm those nerves. Your home can be the best place to begin working toward feeling relaxed and collected, and ready to face the day.

The main thing from the time you wake up is to focus on the positives in your life, and not harp on every single thing that needs to get done all at once. The more you focus on the big picture, it will feel overwhelming, and you will be so caught up in your anxiety that you will not get anything done at all.

Open the blinds or curtains in your home. Letting in the day can be a great way to bring a little peace of mind to you. Find a spot in your home, and truly make it your own. Whether it is your bed, the couch or a comfy chair, set aside a little bit of space that you can claim, and start the process of resting easy.

Begin making a list of things that you need to accomplish for the day. Weekly lists might be helpful too, but the main thing with anxiety is to not get ahead of yourself. A step by step process proves the most effective method in working through excessive nervousness. In addition, you will be able to give yourself little victories by crossing off each task, one by one.

Light music and/or a good book can be great ways to settle down and start feeling good. It is important to take your mind off things for awhile, but at the same time not to ignore your battle with anxiety altogether. Just get into a zone where you can feel good, and take it from there.

While you're at home, there is no shame in taking a little 'me' time. Many people think that they constantly have to be on the go, and with the fast-paced world we live in, it is difficult to take that mental break sometimes. But what we have to consider is that our anxiety will begin to build up over time if we do not pause a bit and relax in the comfort of our own homes.

The last thing you may want to try, after you have calmed your nerves a bit is the wonderful art of aromatherapy. Whether you are having a bad day or you just would simply like to feel good, fragrances can certainly help with anxiety.

Home is where the heart is, and there is no need to feel anxiety within those four walls. Take your time, take a breath or two, and begin sorting through all of those negative feelings. So then you can head to bed feeling calm, cool and collected, and anxiety-free.
