30 Million People in the United States Suffer From Insomnia! Are You One of Them?

Oct 11, 2007
If you find yourself in a constant state of nightly discomfort, if you pace the living room floor at two in the morning, if your mind begins to race when the sun goes down, then chances are you are one of many Americans suffering from insomnia.

While it is definitely something that should be looked into immediately, you probably are experiencing acute insomnia, and not a chronic sleeping disorder. But, either way, it is always good to investigate why you are not getting a full eight hours of sleep every night.

However, just because your sleeping troubles are shared by many in this country, doesn't mean that you should just let it go untreated. It is important to get to the root of the problem in order to treat the insomnia as soon as possible. Several different things could be affecting your sleeping patterns, and it is imperative to get them back on track so you can feel your best.

In this fast-paced and high-tech culture, it is no wonder why people are having so many difficulties falling, and staying, asleep for long periods of time. It is a common occurrence for people to catch a nap here and there, which usually lasts for no more than twenty minutes. They find substitutes for a long night of rest, because they feel they do not have time, or there are many stressors in their lives that cause them to be up for hours.

People should not feel guilty about getting a full night of sleep, nor should they think of it as some kind of chore. Getting a good night's sleep is not a selfish act, but one that truly takes care of your body and is part of a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of how the culture does change, the one constant that remains the same is that people need sleep in order to thrive.

Sure, it is possible to function to some extent with little sleep, but eventually this behavior will catch up with you and cause problems that you may not realize. If you plan on sitting in front of the television for hours at a time, you probably won't notice how a lack of sleep will make you feel. But, when you get into a car, when you are trying to do some work, when you are having trouble concentrating on tasks, this could all be due to a lack of proper rest. Your brain is not functioning at optimum capacity when you only sleep for shorts amount of time.

When you notice that your body is feeling tired, but you cannot seem to close your eyes naturally at night, then it is time to start taking action toward fixing your symptoms of insomnia. Start a new trend in America, and take control of your nights. Remember, that you should ideally be getting anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Sleeplessness should not be labeled as normal, regardless of how many people face it on a regular basis. Napping is the enemy, and your health is very important. Why would you want to compromise that?
